Fact Check

No, Pulwama Martyr’s Widow Did Not Commit Suicide

M Dinakaran, CRPF DIG (Intelligence) denied having received any such news about the kin of the slain CRPF jawans

By - Sulagna Sengupta | 19 Feb 2019 11:54 AM GMT

In a disturbing photo doing the rounds on Facebook, a woman seen hanging from a ceiling fan, is being circulated as that of a martyred CRPF jawan’s widow.

The photo, which has been shared on multiple Facebook pages, claims that a recently widowed woman of a martyred CRPF jawan from the Pulwama terror attacks could not bear the pain and resorted to ending her life. The Hindi text accompanying the post reads as, “CRPF का जो 153 bn ka जवान saheedहुआ है उसकी बीबी ने खुद ख़ुशी karli भाई बहुत गलत करा.”

English translation – The jawan of CRPF’s 153 battalion, who lost his life – his wife has committed suicide. It was (an) extremely wrong (step). A convoy carrying CRPF jawans was attacked by a suicide bomber, killing 40 soldiers on February 14.

BOOM has decided not to feature the post on account of it being too graphic.

Fact check

BOOM spoke to M Dinakaran, CRPF DIG (Intelligence) of CRPF headquarters, who denied having received such news about the kin of the slain CRPF jawans. “We have  not received any information about any widow of any martyred CRPF jawan committing suicide.” According to Dinakaran, the 153 battalion, which is deployed in Bihar, had not received any information of a jawan from the regiment losing his life at the recent Pulwama terror attacks.

BOOM however, could not independently verify the photo. In fact, the official twitter handle of CRPF has appealed to the nation to stop the spread of fake posts, messages and photographs, which are doing the rounds on social media, after the Pulwama attacks.
