Five people have died and 36 injured after a foot overbridge collapsed near Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus Railway Station Thursday evening during peak hours when a lot of commuters use the bridge.

According to the Mumbai police, there have been five casualties, which includes three women and two men as of 9.15 pm.

The deceased are Apoorva Prabhu (35), Ranjana Tambe (40), Zahid Shiraj Khan (32), Sarika Kulkarni (35), and Tapendra Singh (35) according to Deputy Commisoner of Police (DCP) Manjunath Singe.

The bridge connects the platform number 1 of the CST and the iconic Times of India building, and Azad Maidan police station in Mumbai.

"Injured persons are being shifted to hospitals. Traffic affected. Commuters to use alternate routes. Senior officers are on spot," tweeted The Mumbai Police at 7.46 pm.

"Eyewitnesses said repairs were being carried out on the overbridge this morning, but it was still being used. Lakhs use this foot overbridge - built in 1984 - every day," reported NDTV.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavsi, and Railway Minister Piyush Goyal tweeted their condolence.

Rescue operations are currently underway.

The city police have asked commuters to use alternate routes as the affected road has been closed for traffic. A few months back a 40-year old bridge at the Andheri station in the western suburbs had crumpled post heavy rains. In 2017, 23 commuters lost their lives after a stampede on the Elphinstone bridge due to rush hour traffic.
