The Mumbai Transformation Support Unit, the state government’s think-tank for Mumbai, has been tasked with analysing and creating a feasibility report of the odd-even scheme for the city of Mumbai within the next two months. So we went around asking Mumbaikars, does the city need an odd-even formula too?
The Delhi government has implemented the trial of an odd-even formula for vehicles plying in the National Capital. The impact of this formula on air quality is open for debate but this rule has improved traffic congestion and brought down traffic jams considerably.
Similarly, our city of Mumbai has 25 lakh vehicles registered under the Brihanmumbai’s purview. That is almost 10% of the total vehicles registered in the entire state of Maharashtra.
The high-pitched debate over Delhi’s odd-even formula has led to the Maharashtra government dusting off a 15-year-old government report that had suggested a traffic restraint scheme for the country’s commercial capital.
Hence the Mumbai Transformation Support Unit, the state government’s think-tank for Mumbai, has been asked to submit a report on feasibility within the next two months.
