In a major twist to the Dadri lynching case, a forensic report submitted in court has said that the meat from Mohammad Ikhlaq’s house was beef or that of "a cow or its progeny".

Fifty-two-year-old Akhlaq was dragged out of his house and killed by a mob in Dadri, Uttar Pradesh over rumours that he had slaughtered a cow. At least 18 people were arrested including the son of a local Bharatiya Janata Party leader at the time of the incident.
Though eating beef is not illegal in Uttar Pradesh, where Dadri is located, the slaughter of cows is banned. The Dadri incident and other attacks linked to cow-killing and beef-eating were held by opposition parties and activists as examples to highlight rising intolerance in the country.
The new report has been rejected by Akhlaq's family, which has always denied eating beef on the day of the attack.
