Operation Blue Star carried out in 1984 was ordered by Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister, to neutralise the Sikh separatists, led by Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. Jarnail Singh wanted a seperate Sikh homeland 'Khalistan'.

Hundreds of Sikhs and other devotees converged at the sprawling complex of Golden Temple to pay tribute to and attend the prayers held for those who were killed in the operation.
