A fabricated screenshot of a purported BBC article titled ‘Are Indian Gen Z Too Lazy To Burn Down India’ is circulating on social media, with some users reacting to it as genuine.

BOOM found that the image is fabricated and no such article was published by the news outlet. A BBC spokesperson also confirmed the same.

The Claim:
The image is being falsely shared on social media, condemning the BBC's messaging for India's Gen Z.

Archive available here.

When we searched on X with the caption, we found multiple users sharing the screenshot as a real article by BBC.

What We Found:
1) No Article in BBC's repository:
We ran a keyword search on BBC's website and did not find any article with the same title. We ran a reverse image search on the image used in the fabricated article and found that it is from an incident in central France on October 17, 2026, when a group set the Limoges Town Hall on fire amid the ongoing cost-of-living protests. It is unrelated to the protests in India.

BOOM found another article discussing India's Gen Z movements, but the headline is starkly different from the viral image.

2) Statement from BBC: We contacted the BBC via email, and a representative confirmed that the image is fabricated.

3) Grok watermark visible: We found a Grok logo watermark at the bottom right of the image, indicating it was created using Grok's Imagine chatbot.
