Chinese Protesters Deliver Biggest Ever Petition Against Yulin's Dog Meat Festival

By - A Staff Writer | 11 Jun 2016 10:31 AM GMT

Animal rights campaigners in China have handed in a petition with 11 million signatures calling for an end to an annual dog-eating festival in Yulin. The controversial festival sees as many as 10,000 animals butchered and eaten on summer solstice. Thousands of dogs are slaughtered and served in restaurants in Yulin, Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, for the festival.

Dog meat festival is set to begin on June 21 in Yulin. Proponents of Yulin Dog Festival defend the practice as a cultural heritage and argue that eating dogs is no different from eating any other meat.

Humane Society International and Chinese Animal Rights advocates plan to present the petition to officials in Beijing on June 10.
