A brutal gang rape has rocked Latin America’s largest nation and highlighted its endemic problem of violence against women. A 16-year-old girl in Rio De Janeiro was drugged and raped by about 30 men.

The assault came to light after the accused posted a video of the attack on Twitter which went viral. Several men joked about the attack online, posting graphic photos and videos of the unconscious, naked teen. The victim was targeted including receiving death threats on social media, which blamed the girl herself for the attack.
Brazil has a high rate of violence towards women. Government figures suggest more than 13 million women have been victims of domestic abuse, and a woman is killed every two hours on average.
