Assam Floods: Old Flood Images Go Viral

BOOM found that images from previous Assam floods had gone viral as recent flood images.

Several photos have gone viral on social media falsely claiming to be from the recent floods that have hit Assam.

Under the hashtag #AssamFloods, we found that Twitter users were falling for these images sharing them as recent.

The floods in Assam have affected around 26 lakh people and has reportedly led to the death of eleven people.

Image 1:

Old Image.

We performed a reverse image search using the Russian search engine Yandex and found that the image was old.

The search results showed results with the title '2008 Bihar floods'. An Amar Ujala article dating back to 2016, titled 'Preparation Of Bihar Government Regarding Flood In State' came up as one of the results.

Image dating back to July 2016

A Google reverse image search showed that the image was taken by Kulendu Kalita for AFP during the floods that had hit Assam in July 2016.

Image dating back to August 2017

The image of the carcass of a tiger floating in flood waters is from
Kaziranga National Park in Assam, dating back to August 2017.
