Assam has been reeling under heavy rains for over a month and most of the state has been engulfed by floods, affecting more than 18 lakh people.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, the floods have affected 20 out of the total 27 districts and claimed more than 50 lives. Over 18 lakh people in almost 1,880 villages have been hit and the floods have submerged 1.1 lakh hectares of crop land.
The Brahmaputra, Assam's main river which is fed by Himalayan snow melt and monsoon rain, has been overflowing in many areas along its course. The worst-hit is Dhubri district with nearly 4.5 lakh people affected.
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said the state was unable to provide adequate assistance to flood-hit villagers as it did not have enough resources and called on the federal government in New Delhi for more support.
District authorities have set up relief camps in 15 districts, where nearly 1.4 lakh people are lodged. The flood situation continues to remain tense in Assam and the Brahmaputra is still flowing above its danger level in Jorhat, Goalpara and Dhubri districts.
