4G is short for fourth generation, as it is the fourth generation of mobile telecommunications technology, succeeding 3G and preceding 5G. With 4G services being rolled out in India we look at the technology and the benefits of the 4G network.

Bharti Airtel, India's largest telecom operator by subscribers, has announced the commercial launch of its high speed 4G services (also called LTE) in 296 towns across India. The services were rolled out on August 7. But, Airtel will soon have competition from Reliance which is also launching its 4G services called Reliance Jio.

With India set to have more than 300 million data subscribers by 2017, the telecom sector has become a space of intense competition. Experts say that early bird switch overs to 4G will benefit from the low rates.
