The protests were a reaction to a rally Trump held earlier in the day, where he said the election had been rigged to make him lose.
US Media reported that Trump instigated his supporters toward violence. The protesters raided the U.S. Capitol Hill building and vandalised it.
As protesters stormed the capitol building, Vice President Pence presided over a joint sitting that formally elected Biden as US President.
The mayor of Washington D.C. has imposed a curfew of 15 days on the city.
