Ten Dead In Mass Shooting At British Columbia High School In Canada
A mass shooting in northeastern British Columbia has claimed ten lives, including the suspected shooter, and left two dozen people injured, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).
Police found six people found dead inside Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, two at a nearby residence, and one who died on route to hospital. The suspected shooter was found deceased at the school with “what appears to be a self-inflicted injury,” said police.
Tumbler Ridge is a remote mountain community with a population of approximately 2,400 people. Tumbler Ridge Secondary School has 175 students from Grades 7 to 12, according to the province’s website.
RCMP Superintendent Ken Floyd confirmed that authorities have identified the shooter but have not yet released their name. "We are not yet in a position to understand why or what may have motivated this tragedy," Floyd said during a press briefing.
When asked about the connection between the shooter and the victims, Floyd said it is not yet clear how many of the dead were children or what relationship, if any, they had to the shooter.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney responded to the shooting in a statement, saying he was "devastated" by the news. "My prayers and deepest condolences are with the families and friends who have lost loved ones to these horrific acts of violence," he wrote.
