What AR Rahman Said in His BBC Interview and Why It Sparked Controversy
The controversy began after music composer A.R. Rahman’s interview with BBC Asian Network, where he addressed questions about the intention and impact of films, as well as alleged discrimination in the Hindi film industry.
When he was asked whether the film Chhaava was divisive, Rahman said he generally tries to “avoid those kinds of movies.” While acknowledging that the film “is divisive,” he said “the core of the film is to show the bravery,” adding that “people are smarter than that.”
He was also asked about the discrimination against the Tamil community in Bollywood during the 90s, and whether he had faced it, Rahman said, “Maybe I didn’t get to know all this stuff. Maybe God concealed all this stuff. I have never felt any of those [things] in the past eight years, maybe because the power shift has happened people who are not creative have the power now to decide things.”
He added, “This might have been a communal thing also, but not in my face,” adding that he heard through “Chinese whispers” about being sidelined from projects. Referring to such instances, he said, “That’s great, rest for me. I can chill out with my family,” and stressed, “I’m not in search of work.”
His remarks on a possible communal angle triggered the controversy. Actress and politician Kangana Ranaut criticised Rahman on her Instagram story, accusing him of prejudice, alleging that he refused to meet her regarding Emergency as it was seen as a “propaganda film,” and claiming the film was “called a masterpiece by all critics.”
Singer Shantanu Mukherjee, popularly known as Shaan, also dismissed any “communal or minority” angle. Speaking to IANS, he said “I don't think there is any communal minority angle. Whatever you are saying, it doesn't happen in music.” He added that success depends on “doing good work and good music.”
Rahman later shared an Instagram video clarifying his remarks, saying, “I didn’t want to cause pain to anyone,” and adding, “India is my inspiration, my teacher and my home.” He said his work seeks to “uplift, honour and serve through music.”
