NASA Discovers Earth-Sized Planet, Orbits In Habitable Zone Of Its Star

NASA has discovered an earth-sized planet, TOI 700 e, using the data from its Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). The planet is within the habitable zone and could have liquid water on its surface.

The planet, which was spotted using James Webb telescope, is almost exactly the same size as our own, clocking in at 99% of Earth’s diameter, NASA said.

“There is no question that the planet is there. Webb’s pristine data validate it,” said Lustig-Yaeger, who led the research team.

Scientists said the planet completes an orbit in just two days.

NASA said the planet is a few hundred degrees warmer than Earth. "So if clouds are detected, it may lead the researchers to conclude that the planet is more like Venus, which has a carbon dioxide atmosphere and is perpetually shrouded in thick clouds," NASA said.
