Amazon to Lay Off 14,000 Corporate Staff as AI Reshapes Workforce
Amazon announced plans to cut about 14,000 corporate jobs worldwide, with more layoffs expected next year, as the tech giant restructures operations amid its growing adoption of artificial intelligence.
The layoffs signal the early impact of AI on corporate workforces. CEO Andy Jassy had hinted at such reductions in June, noting that automation and AI tools would increasingly handle routine tasks, leading to job cuts.
Amazon, which employs about 1.56 million people globally, including roughly 350,000 in corporate roles. The company said that the affected employees will have 90 days to find new positions internally, with recruiting teams prioritizing them for openings.
The latest cuts affect divisions including devices, advertising, Prime Video, HR, operations, Alexa, and Amazon Web Services (AWS), according to employees who spoke to Reuters. Impacted workers received emails from HR stating, “Your role is being eliminated and your employment will end after a non-working period.”
Senior Vice President Beth Galetti emphasized that AI is central to Amazon’s transformation, saying, “This generation of AI is the most transformative technology we’ve seen since the Internet, and it’s enabling companies to innovate much faster than ever before.”
