Centre Reports 51.32 Lakh Cases Under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Since July 2024
Since the implementation of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) in 2023, the country has registered 51.32 lakh cases under the new law as of November 30, 2025, the Centre told the Rajya Sabha in a written reply.
The Centre said procedural timelines under the new criminal laws have been streamlined, with cases to be committed for trial within 90 days, discharge applications and framing of charges to be completed within 60 days each, and judgments to be pronounced within 45 days.
The Ministry also highlighted provisions to speed up justice delivery, including fast-track investigations for offences against women and children, which must be completed within two months, and a cap of two adjournments in case hearings to avoid delays.
The government said digital tools like e-Summons, e-Sakshya and Nyaya-Shruti (VC) are being used to speed up processes and improve transparency. While e-Summons enables electronic delivery of notices, e-Sakshya helps securely handle digital evidence, and Nyaya-Shruti allows virtual appearances in courts.
According to the state-wise data placed before the House, Uttar Pradesh registered the highest number of BNS cases (6,79,711), followed by Maharashtra (5,27,971), Kerala (4,80,231) and Madhya Pradesh (4,31,856). Smaller states and UTs such as Lakshadweep (83), Ladakh (785) and Andaman & Nicobar Islands (799) reported the lowest numbers.
