12.68 Lakh Government Officials Shifted To Zoho Mail, Says Centre
The government informed the Lok Sabha that 12.68 lakh official email accounts have been migrated from the National Informatics Centre (NIC) system to the Zoho platform, including 7.45 lakh Central government employee accounts. The update came in response to a question by TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee on the status of the migration as of September 30.
Banerjee also sought details on the expenditure and migration process. The Ministry said Zoho was selected as the Master System Integrator to offer a secure, cloud-based email solution equipped with encrypted data storage, multi-factor authentication (MFA), geo-fencing controls, anti-spoofing measures, and a mandated 99.9% uptime.
However, the Ministry did not disclose the total cost of migration, including spending on software licences, infrastructure, training, or the recurring annual expenses since 2023–24.
Zoho Mail, developed by Chennai-based Zoho Corporation—co-founded by Sridhar Vembu and Tony Thomas in 1996—is a secure email service designed for enterprise and government use.
In 2023, MeitY floated a tender to transition government email accounts from the NIC system to a cloud-based platform, and Zoho won the contract.
Since October 2025, both Central and State governments have begun shifting to this “Swadeshi platform.” Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced that he had switched his official email to Zoho Mail in a social media post.
