WhatsApp Faces Possible Block In Russia As Users Sue Over Call Restrictions
WhatsApp criticised Russia for restricting its services on Dec 23, accusing authorities of trying to deny over 100 million Russians access to private communication ahead of the holiday season, according to the Reuters.
Russia’s internet regulator Roskomnadzor has previously warned that it may fully block WhatsApp if it does not follow Russian laws. The regulator claims WhatsApp is being used for terrorism, recruitment and fraud, and says it is slowly restricting the service.
In August 2025, Russia started limiting voice and video calls on WhatsApp and Telegram, saying it was part of an anti-fraud campaign.
A group of 42 WhatsApp and Telegram users has filed a class-action lawsuit against Roskomnadzor and the Digital Development Ministry on Dec 23, saying the restrictions violate their right to privacy and free communication, reported by Moscow Times.
The Russian government is promoting a state-backed messaging app called MAX, which critics say could allow user surveillance. Authorities deny this claim.
