Suriya, Jai Bhim Makers Served Defamation Notice By Vanniyar Sangam, Rs 5 Crore Sought In Damages
The Vanniyar Sangam State President has demanded that the makers of the film tender an unconditional apology and remove scenes which they dubbed defamatory. They have also sought Rs 5 crore in damages.
The notice states that although Jai Bhim is based on real events, the character of the sub-inspector depicted as torturing Rajakannu has been shown as belonging to the Vanniyar community even though the sub-inspector in the actual incident was a Christian.
The notice also claims that the "agni kudam" symbol associated with Vanniyars was shown in the movie with "malafide intention of defaming the members of the Vanniyar Sangam".
The critically acclaimed Jai Bhim is based on a 1993 case about a tribal woman's fight to find her missing husband Rajakannu. Suriya portrays the role of retired Justice K Chandru, who fought for R Parvathy in 1993.
