X Rolls Out New Transparency Feature To Reveal Account Backgrounds
Elon Musk’s X has begun rolling out a new transparency feature called “About this account,” which displays details such as a user’s location, username change history, join date, and the app store through which the account was created.
The feature was first revealed in October when X’s head of product, Nikita Bier, announced that testing would begin on his profile and those of other X employees. Since then, more users have reported seeing the panel appear on their own profiles.
Users can access this information by tapping the account’s join date in the profile section. The update also reveals when the account was created, the number of username changes, verification status, and the country linked to the app store—offering a clearer understanding of an account’s background.
The purpose of this feature is to help users determine whether an account is authentic or attempting to spread false or misleading information.
However, critics argue that displaying a user’s location could pose privacy risks, especially for those who prefer to keep such details private. They caution that sensitive users may feel exposed if their country is made visible.
To ease these concerns, X now allows users to display only their continent or a broader region instead of a specific country. Still, the rollout remains limited, and in many cases, users can view detailed information only on their own profiles and not on those of others.
