Why Pakistan Is Boycotting Its T20 World Cup Match Against India
Pakistan has decided to boycott their Group A match against India in the T20 World Cup this year. The announcement was made through the Pakistani government’s official X account.
The statement said the government had granted permission for the Pakistan team to travel to Sri Lanka for the tournament, but clarified that “the Pakistan cricket team shall not take the field in the match scheduled on 15 February 2026 against India.” The statement did not specify the reason behind the decision.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had earlier said it would reassess its participation in the tournament in solidarity with Bangladesh. This stance has now resulted in selective participation instead of a full withdrawal.
The commercial implications of the decision could be massive. According to a report by The Age, this boycott could cost world cricket more than a quarter of a billion dollars. The most recent ICC-JioStar deal, worth US$3 billion (approx ₹25,000 crore), spans the period from 2023 to 2027.
Under the Member Participation Agreement, the PCB is legally bound to play. However, the tournament will go on, and India will be awarded the points.
