Meta Rolls Out Mobile Tool to Protect Original Reels on Facebook
Meta has launched a new mobile “Facebook content protection” tool that alerts creators when their original reels are used without permission and lets them block, track, or attribute reused content.
The feature aims to protect originality and encourage creators to share more on Facebook. As part of this effort, Meta recently removed 10 million impersonating profiles and acted against 500,000 spam or fake-engagement accounts.
The tool also safeguards Instagram content, but creators must post or cross-post their reels to Facebook for tracking.
The access of tool is available to creators in the Facebook Content Monetization program who meet originality and integrity standards, as well as users of Rights Manager. The notifications of eligibility appear in Feed, Professional Dashboard, or profile; creators can also apply manually.
The tool uses Meta’s matching technology to show percentage match, views, follower count, and monetization details. Creators can set allow lists for permitted accounts to avoid unnecessary flags.
The attribution links can add an “original” label pointing back to the creator’s profile or page. Blocking a reel reduces its distribution but doesn’t punish the account that copied it.
Creators who misuse the tool or file false claims may face account restrictions. They can also challenge incorrect protections or submit copyright takedown requests when needed. The tool is currently available only on mobile, with desktop integration still in testing.
