India Repatriates 270 Nationals Linked to Myanmar Cyber Scam Centres
India has repatriated 270 nationals, including 26 women, from the Thai border town of Mae Sot after they fled cyber scam centres in Myanmar.
The evacuees had crossed into Thailand from Myawaddy in Myanmar, where they were reportedly working in cyber scam operations. Thai authorities detained them for illegally entering the country.
The Indian Embassy in Bangkok and Consulate in Chiang Mai coordinated the repatriation with Thai government agencies. Among those repatriated are both victims lured by false job offers and individuals allegedly involved in running the scams.
Indian officials are set to question the returnees to determine their roles in the cyber scam operations, with legal action to follow where necessary. Additional flights are scheduled to repatriate more Indian nationals in the coming days.
The Indian Ministry urged citizens to verify the credentials of foreign employers and recruiting agents before accepting overseas job offers, and cautioned against misusing Thailand’s visa-free entry for employment purposes.
This is the second major operation this year. In March 2025, India had repatriated 549 nationals from similar cybercrime hubs along the Myanmar–Thailand border. The latest effort follows Myanmar’s military crackdown on the Chinese-backed KK Park in Myawaddy township.
