Centre Says Road Accidents Increased 31% Between 2020 And 2024
The government informed the Rajya Sabha on December 10, 2025, that 344,446 over-speeding accidents were reported in 2024, leading to 123,947 deaths, compared to 264,617 accidents and 91,239 fatalities in 2020.
The data, shared in response to an unstarred question by MP Narain Dass Gupta, highlights a steep rise in over-speeding incidents and related deaths between 2020 and 2024 (accidents up 30.2%, fatalities up 35.8%).
According to the state-wise figures, Madhya Pradesh (45,833), Karnataka (39,070), Maharashtra (26,248), Kerala (25,687) and Uttar Pradesh (22,088) recorded the highest number of over-speeding accidents in 2024, with fatalities concentrated largely in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.
The government also outlined trends across other risk categories. Accidents involving overloaded or hanging vehicles declined slightly from 25,568 in 2020 to 24,731 in 2024, though fatalities from such crashes remained largely unchanged.
Deaths due to non-wearing of helmets rose sharply from 42,154 to 54,493 during the same period, while fatalities linked to not wearing seat belts fell from 16,108 to 14,595.
Crashes involving drivers without a valid licence also dropped from 34,854 in 2020 to 32,603 in 2024, according to the annexures submitted to the House.
